Fish Grow (1)
Checkerboard Cichlid (Dicrossus filamentosus)

Competition Duration: 5/4/2007 through 11/2/2007       View This Competition Photo Album - Winners and Participants

General Information: Checkerboard Cichlids should be avoided by the beginner aquarist as they have special water quality requirements. For the more experienced aquarist it is an excellent dwarf cichlid for the first time cichlid keeper. Relatively easy mannered, will be mildly territorial towards each other and more peaceful towards different species. Safe to keep in the planted tank as these fish do not dig and will not eat or rip out plants. If kept in community tanks avoid keeping with aggressive fish as well as fast moving nippy fish. Cardinal tetras, Corydoras catfish as well as Discus would all be safe choices for a community tank.

Fish Grow (2)
Red Phantom Tetra

Competition Duration: 5/4/2007 through 11/2/2007       View This Competition Photo Album - Winners and Participants

The Red Phantom prefers lots of plants, driftwood and rocks. It is a timid, slow moving tetra and will school for security. Groups of 6 or more are recommended. Fast swimming tank mates are not a good combination with Red Phantoms. Similar to the Black Phantom, they will twist and turn around each other in intricate displays. They will eat food flakes, spirulina, freeze-dried bloodworms and live foods, such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. A healthy diet is essential in bringing out full coloring.

Dwarf Sword

Competition Duration: 5/4/2007 through 11/2/2007       View This Competition Photo Album - Winners and Participants

Due to poor conditions and late arival of the Crypt Becketti, we have changed the April-October grow plant to a variety of dwarf sword.

In addition, due to the fact the plants were not distributed until May, the competition will end in November. The following competition however will last only for 5 months so we can get back on track.

Fish Grow
Black Ruby Barb (Puntius nigrofasciatus)

Competition Duration: 11/3/2006 through 5/4/2007       View This Competition Photo Album - Winners and Participants

Plenty of room should be provided for this fish, with plenty of light with a shallow covering of floating plants and ample vegetation (half to two-thirds of the tank area). A layer of humus should be left on the bottom. This species is good for keeping with other barbs and similar fish. In captivity, the fish are omnivorous, with a healthy appetite.

Plant Grow
Water Sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides)

Competition Duration: 10/6/2006 through 4/6/2007

This plant normally grows fast, but the addition of CO2 may be necessary to promote growth. In small open aquariums it can grow out of the aquarium and form beautiful surface leaves. The finely branched leaves are very decorative and provide good contrast to other leaf shapes. In good light Ceratopteris thalictroides grows fast and helps prevent algae by consuming large amounts of nutrients. This makes it a good starter plant in small aquariums.
